People’s Climate March, 9/21:

A message from the organizers of the Food Justice Contingent:

  • The People’s Climate March on September 21 will be the largest climate march in history.  It is designed to coincide with the UN Climate Summit starting on September 23.  Many heads of state will be in NYC, so it is important to push Obama to agree to a strong climate agreement.
  • The Food Justice contingent will be composed of farmers, community gardeners, restaurants and restaurant workers, food processing workers, food coops, food pantries, CSAs, and grassroots food organizations in New York.  We are trying to gather as many people involved in food justice, sustainability, food security, and agriculture together to form part of the Food Justice contingent.
  • We are creating beautiful visuals to “tell the story” of how a sustainable food system can be one of the “solutions” to climate change.
  • The Food Justice contingent (exact block to meet on to be announced soon) will be gathering at a location still to be decided.  As part of the lead-up to the march, we plan to have some big name speakers talk to the crowd, music, entertainers.  We are encouraging people to bring metal water bottles and pots or pans to bang as percussion instruments.  People can carry the beautiful signs we are making to depict a healthy food system for the future or bring signs of their own.
  • We need the participation of all the food organizations in the city to have the kind of impact we need on climate and food policy.
  • The Food Justice contingent will meet at 11:00 to get ready for the march, hear speakers, get props, get organized and have fun. Exact meet up location will be announced as soon as the NYPD finalizes these details with the march organizers.  At the moment, the most concrete information we have is that we will be organizing on Central Park West just north of 75th.
