Childhood obesity is a serious health concern disproportionately affecting east Harlem youth. Several organizations have developed food and health related programming involving education and advocacy as a means to address obesity by empowering and improving the health of East Harlem youth.

  • Association to Benefit Children – A non-profit that works with disadvantaged children and their families. ABC’s comprehensive and integrated services are designed to permanently break the cycles of abuse, neglect, sickness and homelessness. Its programs include early childhood education, educational advocacy, housing assistance, mental health services, family support and preservation, crisis intervention, therapeutic out-of-school programs, youth leadership development and mentoring. 419 East 86th Street, NY, NY 10028 (212) 845-382
  • CHALK (Choosing Healthy and Active Lifestyles for Kids) @ NY Presbyterian
  •  Children’s Aid Society East Harlem Center – Helps children in poverty to succeed and thrive through providing comprehensive supports to children and their families in targeted high-needs New York City neighborhoods. Children’s Aid Society food-related programming includes: Go! Healthy, Food Justice After School Programs, and Next Generation Caterers. 130 East 101st St., New York, NY 10029
  • Andrew Glover Youth Program – The Andrew Glover Youth Program provides alternatives to incarceration and crime prevention programming to youth from the Lower East Side and East Harlem neighborhoods in Manhattan. East Harlem Center: 2276 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10035. 212-987-9486
  • Harlem Community Justice Center – The Harlem Community Justice Center is a multi-jurisdictional community court that seeks to solve local problems, including youth crime, landlord-tenant disputes, and the challenges of parolees reentering the East Harlem neighborhood. The Justice Center helps local landlords and tenants to resolve conflicts and access financial support; provides services for at-risk young people, and offers reentry programs for ex-offenders. 170 East 121st Street, New York, NY 10035 (212) 360-4100
  • Harlem RBI – Harlem RBI, a non-profit organization, is a unique, year-round youth development program based in East Harlem, New York. Since its founding in 1991, Harlem RBI has grown to serve more than 1,500 boys and girls annually, ages 5-22, providing them with year-round sports, educational and enrichment activities. 333 East 100th Street, NY, NY 10029
  • MaCHO (Motivating Action through Community Health Outreach) – a student-run volunteer program based in the Community Service Office of Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC). There are two programs: YWP (Youth Wellness Program) and YLP (Youth Leadership Program).

  • Youth Action Project & Homes/YouthBuild – YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16 to 24 work full-time for 6 to 24 months toward their GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable housing in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth committed to each other’s success.
  • STRIVE New York – East Harlem – STRIVE New York is a non-profit committed to providing services to New Yorkers from all boroughs and of all ages, backgrounds, and needs. Their services include employment, fatherhood and youth programs – all focused on our mission to help individuals acquire the skills and attitudes they need to overcome challenging circumstances, find sustained employment, and become valuable contributors to their families, employers and communities. 240 East 123rd Street
