Tania Maree Giordani and NourishNYC: COVID-19 Food Hero

by NYC Food Policy Editor

Why She’s a Food Hero: NourishNYC was born as soon as Tania Maree Giordani saw need in the community at the beginning of the pandemic. The group began by distributing food, water, and PPE to protesters in Manhattan, but as they raised more money, Giordani was able to expand the organization to help any New Yorker in need. The group has partnered with numerous other mutual aid groups and grassroots community organizations in order to provide as many resources as possible to marginalized people in need.

Background: Tania Maree Giordani attended a racial justice protest in Union Square in May 2020, and immediately recognized what other protesters and activists needed—PPE and water. She founded NourishNYC in May 2020 by using her social media presence and expertise in order to provide support to protesters. Before starting NourishNYC, Giordani used her social media accounts to promote her business as a makeup artist.

Work: Today, NourishNYC continues to provide support kits (with snacks and PPE) to people on the ground who need it. Furthermore, the group hosts “community open hours” where marginalized people can come together and talk about their experiences. Giordani also helps run the Supper Collective and Mil Mundos Books.

Location: Brooklyn and Manhattan
