Center News and Events – January 2014

With the fall semester behind us and the holidays just wrapping up, Center staff have been using this past month as a time to meet, celebrate, reflect and plan for the spring semester and beyond.NYCFPC_vert_color_centered_2

Closing our Fall 2013 Food Policy for Breakfast seminar series, Dr. Freudenberg moderated Food Policy for Breakfast: Beyond Bloomberg, a panel discussion on December 17th, 2013 featuring Kim Kessler, former Food Policy Coordinator in the Office of the Mayor of New York City, and Nancy Romer, founder and member of the Governance Board of the Brooklyn Food Coalition. Discussion ranged from the achievements of the previous administration, opportunities and limitations of the City in addressing food issues, pressing food issues facing New York, and advice for advocates looking to make a difference in this new mayoral administration. Since our last newsletter, we’ve also been busy filling our spring event calendar, working on our forthcoming report The Public Plate In New York City: A Guide to Institutional Meals, developing our website and preparing for our spring 2014 East Harlem Research Action Workshop. Led by Center co-directors Dr. Nicholas Freudenberg and Dr. Janet Poppendieck, this spring 2014 course will be taught at the CUNY School of Public Health East Harlem campus, bringing together all levels of higher-education students, community advocates and organizations to learn about food systems issues in East Harlem and other low-income communities and develop solutions to the challenges of food insecurity and diet-related disease affecting the most vulnerable populations in our city.

We are also active within the NYC Food Forum, a gathering of food-active organizations that collectively support a better food future for New York City has also been active in developing strategies to advance NYC food policy in the new mayoral administration in our five priority areas: hunger, healthy food, school food, food economy and food governance. Sign on to the primer, our guiding document available here.

Stay tuned for event notices and for our new report early this year. We look forward to a productive 2014 working with our community partners, CUNY, policy makers, advocates, and the public towards a the development of smart, fair food policy for New York.
